Drawing I Final Project

For the final project I had to create a series of 3 drawings. The choices of style of drawing and drawing mediums were left up to me. Since I enjoyed working with Conte crayon on dark paper previously I knew what I would use for this project. Coming up with something interesting to draw was the difficult part. In class we worked on drawing reflective surfaces and I thought that was challenging. A friend gave me this wonderful glass container. So I decided to create 3 still life's using the container and other objects. I started by creating a table on top of my bed covered with a white sheet. To eliminate distractions in the background I draped a portion of the sheet from the ceiling. The container needed something inside it, so I filled it with various things to create an pleasing composition. (Although looking at them now I might have not centered the container but instead placed it off center to either side) I pointed a bright lamp directly at the objects to create some interesting shadows and reflections.

I filled the container with apples placing one on the table. With the still life set up I begin filling the paper with white conte crayon careful to follow the direction of the objects I was drawing. When the paper was full  I used cotton balls to smooth out the larger areas and q-tips and  blending stumps for the finer details. I began subtracting the white using various erasers. To finish it off I created highlights with the white conte crayon.

Since it is December, I used glass Christmas ornaments and a pine cone for this still life. The ornaments added more reflective surfaces to this composition. I used the same drawing method as the first drawing.

For the final composition I decided to try yet another reflective surface, water. The water created great reflections in the shadow. The flowers were added for interest. I continued using the same method of drawing to complete this piece.
